Álvaro Robles Aguilar was born in Cartago on September 13, 1926, to Rogelio Robles Peralta and Carmen Aguilar León. He completed his primary and secondary studies in his hometown, attending the Ascensión Esquivel School, the Jesús Jiménez School, and the San Luis Gonzaga College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1943. He then enrolled at the University of Costa Rica, earning his degree in Civil Engineering in 1949.

Throughout several decades, he built a distinguished career as a civil engineer and architect. He played a central role in the creation of the School of Architecture at the University of Costa Rica and later served as a tutor in the architecture program at UACA.

On multiple occasions, the Costa Rican College of Engineers and Architects (CFIA) appointed him Sole Arbitrator and member of the Jury of Arbitrators to resolve technical disputes between property owners and engineering or architectural firms. From 1966 to 1970, he served on the Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE). He was also a board member of Lincoln College and, for several years, an honorary advisor to the Works Commission of the Municipality of Santo Domingo de Heredia, where he lived for many years in a splendid colonial house.

He married María Eugenia Quirós Sáenz and passed away in San José on January 6, 1984.
