The history of ARAICA is defined by two fundamental periods, corresponding to the leadership of the two presidents who have guided the company throughout its 61 years of existence: Engineer–Architect Álvaro Robles Aguilar (1963–1984) and, subsequently, Engineer Carlos José Bresciani Quirós (1984–present).
The origin of our name is inspired by our founder, Álvaro Robles Aguilar
ARAICA was founded in 1963 in response to the growing demand in the construction and consulting market, by Architect and Civil Engineer Álvaro Robles Aguilar (†) and Architect Humberto Malavassi Jiménez.
From the very beginning, the company was distinguished by its constant focus on quality and efficiency in every construction project, which enabled steady and sustainable growth throughout the mid-1960s and early 1970s. With the incorporation of Engineer Pablo Gorini Losser (), ARAICA broadened its portfolio of services in consulting, engineering, and architecture, strengthening its role in the development and execution of major projects.
In 1981, Engineer Carlos José Bresciani Quirós joined the company. Following the passing of its founder, Architect and Engineer Álvaro Robles Aguilar, in 1984, he assumed the presidency of ARAICA. Later, Engineer Jan Marcel Reiman Soto joined this endeavor. Together, they expanded the company’s activities by increasing its construction operations, reinforcing its design and project inspection areas, and launching property appraisal services for the National Insurance Institute (INS) across the country.

Recognitions and congratulations from our clients, suppliers, and business partners.
As part of the significant growth experienced during the 1980s, ARAICA carried out notable projects such as shopping centers; the headquarters of the National Chamber of Milk Producers of RL; the headquarters of the College of Professionals in Economic Sciences; the Incesa Standard chrome plating industrial plant; as well as office buildings, kindergartens, gymnasiums, the Alperaval Camp in San Carlos, and the construction of the bus terminal for the Metropolitan Free Trade Zone.
In the housing sector, two areas stand out: on one hand, the construction of individual homes featuring refined designs and high-quality finishes in residential areas; and on the other, urban development and large-scale housing projects, such as the 127 homes in the “La Pradera” development in La Guácima, Alajuela, and 14 homes built for the Tárcoles Project o Reconocimientos y felicitaciones de nuestros clientes, proveedores y socios comerciales.f UNHCR – European Economic Community, in addition to the Planned Housing Complex in Goicoechea—all contributing to meeting the country’s housing needs.
During its first 25 years, ARAICA was also actively involved in inspections of buildings, industrial plants, homes, warehouses, and residential developments, as well as conducting appraisals for the Costa Rican Insurance Institute (INS).
In 1984, following the passing of the founder, Álvaro Robles Aguilar, his widow, Mrs. María Eugenia Quirós Sáenz de Robles, was faced with the dilemma of what to do with the company. Mr. Robles was a highly respected figure in the construction industry, and internally the company relied heavily on him for its operations and management.
At that critical moment, Mrs. Robles Quirós had to decide whether to continue with the business. Ultimately, she chose to entrust the leadership of the company to someone she trusted: Engineer Carlos José Bresciani Quirós, then a young 26-year-old who was just beginning his professional career as a civil engineer.
The great challenge for Engineer Carlos José Bresciani at that time was to carry on the legacy of the business that his uncle, with great effort, had started 19 years earlier, while honoring the promise he made to his aunt, María Eugenia Robles, to always conduct himself under the highest standards of quality, ethics, and professionalism.
Since that distant year of 1984, 41 years ago, our company has undergone major transformations, changes, difficult times, and countless challenges. Yet, the tireless fighting spirit, integrity, quality of service, commitment, and dedication of Mr. Carlos José Bresciani and his team have not only enabled ARAICA to remain relevant in the construction and asset valuation industry, but also to position itself, consolidate, and grow as a serious, solid, and highly reliable company for our clients, suppliers, and business partners.
What motivated you to lead ARAICA, and what has your career within the company been like?
ARAICA’s origins date back to 1963, when it was founded by Álvaro Robles Aguilar. My connection with the company began in 1981. After the death of my uncle, the founder, and being the only architect in the family, I assumed responsibility for continuing the company. Since then, I have led ARAICA for more than 40 years, expanding our services in areas such as construction, appraisals, and consulting. My motivation has always been to maintain and grow this company, with the hope that it will continue for many more years.
What do you consider having been your greatest achievement as president of ARAICA during these more than 40 years?
The greatest achievement has been maintaining stability over so many years. In a sector full of ups and downs, we have managed to keep the company strong and successful. Although we have faced difficult times, we have known how to adapt, strengthen our conviction, and continue to grow.
What skills do you think are key to leading a company in the appraisal, construction, and consulting sectors?
A strong team is essential, from the technical and accounting departments to construction and procurement. In the construction field, it is crucial to have qualified engineers and construction foremen who are not only competent but also possess a high level of integrity. The key is to surround yourself with capable and honest people to ensure the company’s continuity and success.
What makes ARAICA unique in the Costa Rican market for you?
Perseverance has been key. We have adapted to market changes, evolving from a consulting firm into a construction company and, more recently, incorporating appraisals. We are also proud to have a young, innovative team that ensures the company’s future for at least 30 more years.
How would you define ARAICA’s commitment to its clients?
We differentiate ourselves by offering personalized services, not only as suppliers but also as partners to our clients. We provide detailed advice, which has allowed us to earn their trust over the years. While we are not always the most economical option, we guarantee high-quality service that justifies the investment.
What is your vision for ARAICA over the next five years?
We expect to grow more aggressively in the coming years, especially in the fields of appraisals and consulting. We will also consider further expanding our operations in the construction sector, although we recognize it is a highly competitive and challenging industry. The goal is for ARAICA to grow substantially over the next five years.
How has the company handled significant challenges in large-scale projects?
The success of large projects, such as the Don Bosco headquarters in Alajuelita, depends on having a clear understanding of client expectations and ensuring that all parties involved are aligned. This project motivated us greatly because, in addition to the construction aspect, we also worked together with the community to provide social benefits. Through this project, we contributed not only to academic education but also to the spiritual and personal growth of more than 20,000 students—an achievement that gives us great satisfaction.
